Charles Ess received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the Pennsylvania State University, writing on Kant’s use of analogical predication. He is Professor of Philosophy and Religion, Drury University (Springfield, Missouri) and currently Guest Professor, Department of Information- and Media Studies, Aarhus University (Aarhus, Denmark). He has also served as a guest professor at IT-University (Copenhagen), Trier University (Germany), the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norway), Nîmes (France). He has received awards for excellence in both teaching and scholarship, and has published extensively in both philosophy and media studies, including as guest editor for special issues of
The Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Ethics and Information Technology, and New Media and Society.

Keynote Speaker: Gianpetro Mazzoleni
Gianpietro Mazzoleni is professor of sociology of communication and of political communication at the University of Milan (Italy), where he coordinates the post-graduate courses in communication in the Faculty of Political Sciences. He is member of the editorial boards of the European Journal of Communication (Sage) and of Political Communication (Taylor & Francis), and editor of the Italian scholarly journal Comunicazione Politica (Franco Angeli, Milano). His research interests focus especially on media policies and political communication. He has been member and coordinator of several international teams working on comparative research projects in the above areas.
Keynote Speaker: Gustavo Cardoso
Gustavo Cardoso is Professor of Media and Society at IUL - Lisbon University Institute. His areas of interest are the cultures of the network society, the transformations of the notions of property, distribution and production of cultural goods and the role of online social networking. His current research interest focuses on the transformation of digital readership, the future of journalism and media literacies. His international cooperation in European research networks led him to work with IN3 (Internet Interdisciplinary Institute) in Barcelona, WIP (World Internet Project) at USC Annenberg, COST A20 "The Impact of the Internet in Mass Media" and COST 298 "Broadband Society." He is a member of the evaluation panels of the European Research Council (ERC), of the COST network, ESF (European Science Foundation) Forward Look on Media Literacy. He is also Associate Editor at the peer-reviewed journals IJOC at USC Annenberg, IC&S at Routledge and Editor of Observatorio (OBS*) Journal. Marwan M. Kraidy is Associate Professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. A scholar of global communication and an expert on Arab media and politics, Kraidy was previously a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the founding director of the Arab Media and Public Life (AMPLE) project at American University, both in Washington DC. More recently, Kraidy was Scholar-in-residence in the Scholars Program in Culture and Communication at Annenberg.
Keynote Speaker: Nelson Zagalo
Nelson Zagalo is Assistant Professor at the University of Minho (UM) - Portugal. He got his PhD on Communication Technology from the University of Aveiro about new interaction paradigms in virtual environments. He is director of the Master on Interactive Media and part of the board direction of the master on Technology and Digital Art of UM. He co-chairs the research group EngageLab at Computer Graphics Center and chairs the Portuguese Society of Videogame Sciences. He has more than forty peer-reviewed publications in the fields of film, videogames, interactive storytelling and emotion and has chaired the Digital Games 2008 – National Research Conference; the SLACTIONS 2009 International Conference: Life, imagination, and work using metaverse platforms; and the ICIDS2009 - 2nd International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling. Nelson is the author of the book "Interactive Emotions, from Film to Videogames" (2009).
Keynote Speaker: Paula Cordeiro
Paula Cordeiro holds a PhD in Communication, with a specialization in Audiovisual and Interactive Media. Teaches Undergraduate and Graduate programs such as Communication and Digital Media, Radio Production or Communication Theories at ISCSP. Has been researching the field of Digital Media and Radio since 2000. Her research interests include technology convergence; social networks and radio; programming formats and cultural diversity; socio-cultural behaviors and online radio discourse; also the re conceptualisation of radio in digital platforms. Has participated in different research projects and as speaker in national and European congress, meetings and seminars. Has recently published a book about radio and cultural industries (2010) and is working on her new book, about radio and the Internet. She is a member of the general counsel of APR, and member of ECREA and CAPP.

Francisco Rui Cádima is currently Associate Professor and Coordinator of the New Media Master at the Communication Sciences Department - New University of Lisbon (UNL). He is also Coordinator of the Graduate course of Communications Sciences at the same Department. He has been Coordinator and President of the Scientific Commission of the Communication Sciences Department (New University of Lisbon, 1994-95 and 2008-09). He has a PhD on Communication (UNL, July 1993) under the theme
Political System and Information News on RTP Under the Portuguese Dictatorship (1957-1974).
He was Director of Obercom - Observatório da Comunicação (Communication Observatory), from 1999-2004 and member of IPDC Programme - UNESCO (2001-05) and also Director of
